Compare the Monarch All-Terrain Legless Chair and the Mayfly Low Ground Chair to find the best camp chair for your outdoor adventures.
Quick answer
Choose the Monarch All-Terrain Legless Chair if you need a stable seat on uneven ground and want to rock; pick the Mayfly Low Ground Chair if you prefer a low-profile incline for lounging on flat surfaces like festivals or the beach.
Why the seat design matters for comfort
Both chairs sit close to the ground, but they achieve that low profile differently. The Monarch uses a tent-pole frame that balances on two rubber feet, letting you rock forward and back. That rocking motion helps you stay comfortable on hillsides or bumpy terrain because your weight shifts naturally with the slope.
The Mayfly takes a different approach: it's an incline chair designed for lounging. You can remove the front leg section and support yourself with just the back, which lets you recline further. This makes it ideal for relaxing at concerts or on the beach where the ground is relatively flat and you want to kick back.
Packing and portability trade-offs
Both chairs pack small enough for carry-on luggage or small backpacks, but their packed shapes differ. The Monarch's aluminum hub and pole system means quick setup and a compact bundle. The Mayfly is also praised for packing small, but its incline design may take slightly more care when folding.
If you hike to a remote campsite and need the lightest possible load, the Monarch's simpler two-leg structure gives it an edge. For car camping or festival hopping where you set up once and stay put, the Mayfly's lounging comfort may be worth the extra ounces.
How to choose between legless and low ground chairs
- Terrain type: If your campsite has uneven ground, slopes, or hillsides, the Monarch's two-leg rocker design keeps you balanced. If you're on flat sand, grass, or a festival field, the Mayfly's incline is more comfortable.
- Seating posture: The Monarch lets you sit upright and rock, which is good for cooking or chatting. The Mayfly encourages a reclined lounging position, better for reading, napping, or watching a stage. Think about whether you'll be active (Monarch) or passive (Mayfly) while seated.
- Packing priority: Both pack small, but the Monarch's hub-and-pole system sets up fastest and packs lightest. The Mayfly's incline frame may require a bit more space and time to fold. For backpacking or carry-on travel, the Monarch is slightly more convenient.
